Forty minutes south of Colombo, a coconut grove opens onto four hundred metres of private beach. Villas Wadduwa is twelve rooms, one pool that runs the length of the garden, and a kitchen that cooks whatever came off the boat that morning. It is not a resort. There is no lobby, no wristband, no schedule.

The house

Built in 1936, and mostly still is

The house was built in 1936 as a planter's residence and spent sixty years as a family home before it became a villa. Most of it is still original — the satinwood staircase, the red cement floors polished by three generations of bare feet, the verandah where the afternoon rain is best watched. What we added, we added quietly: a pool, twelve bathrooms, and a kitchen that can hold its own.

Not a shared strip. The sand in front of the villa belongs to the house, and there are only ever twelve rooms' worth of people on it.

A king bed, a private bathroom finished in stone, and a terrace that opens onto the gardens. Air conditioning, a flat-screen television and a kitchenette you will probably only use for the kettle. The quietest rooms on the property, set back from the pool.

Opening straight onto the lawn

The same king bed and kitchenette as the Premium Room, but placed where the gardens do the work — full-height doors onto a planted terrace, and a pair of chairs nobody manages to leave before dark. Ask for one of the pavilion rooms if you want the tiled roof and the frangipani.

A house of your own, with a balcony over the palms

Two floors, a vaulted timber ceiling, and a balcony deep enough to eat breakfast on while the pool empties out below. The bedroom opens on two sides, so the sea breeze runs straight through it. Bathrooms are the size of most rooms.

The best rooms on the property. A private plunge pool screened by planting, an open-air bathroom with a sunken tub, and a courtyard of ferns lit from below after dark. Everything the Luxury Villa has, plus the reason people book a year ahead.

The kitchen decides the menu at four in the afternoon, once it knows what the Negombo boats landed.

The Verandah

Where breakfast happens, cooked to order rather than laid out. Egg hoppers, curd with kithul treacle, and a French press if you insist. Lunch is lighter — grilled fish, a salad from the garden beds, and the day's short eats.

The Long Table

One satinwood table, sixteen chairs, and a menu decided at four in the afternoon depending on what the Negombo boats landed. You may eat at it with everyone else or ask for a table of your own in the garden; nobody minds either way.

Sunset until late

The Beach Shack

Four hundred metres of sand and one bar on it. Arrack sours, king coconut, and a charcoal grill that comes out when enough people want it to. Barefoot, always.

About 75 minutes on the southern expressway, traffic depending. We arrange the transfer at USD 45 each way in an air-conditioned car, and the driver waits inside arrivals with your name.

From November to April, yes — the water is calm and there is a sandbar about thirty metres out. During the southwest monsoon (May to September) the surf gets heavy and we recommend the pool, which is 25 metres and heated in the cooler months.

Yes. A full buyout is all twelve rooms, the pool, the garden and the kitchen staff for exclusive use. Select 'Full Villa Buyout' when you check availability, or ask us for a wedding proposal.

Very. The pool has a shallow end, the kitchen will cook plain rice at any hour, and the garden rooms interconnect. We do ask that under-12s are supervised on the beach.

Our Flexible rate cancels free up to 48 hours before arrival. Advance Purchase is 20% cheaper and non-refundable. You will see both, with their terms, before you enter any details.

Tell us at booking and the kitchen will build around it rather than substituting. Vegan, coeliac, and allergy cooking are handled on a separate surface.
